Educate Workers: Preventing and Access to Services

¡¡¡¡

Educate workers

A key goal of an HIV/AIDS prevention program is to promote safe and healthy behaviors through a comprehensive and coordinated set of communication activities. These activities support individuals to protect themselves, their families and friends from HIV infection.

Programs should also promote use of health services for sexually transmitted infections, HIV testing and counseling and AIDS treatment.

An HIV/AIDS program should use a multi-channeled communication approach to change employees risk behavior. These may include:

- Banners, posters, brochures, CDs, videos

- Company newsletters

- Integrated information into recruitment training, skills training, and occupational health and safety briefing

- Peer education

- Information and referrals for testing, counseling and treatment and other related services

- Integration information into trade union activities

Provide Access to Services

Programs should provide information about available services. These services are generally available for subsidized prices to workers. Companies should identify available services and promote them to employees.

- Counseling and Testing - The government provides HIV testing and counseling services in most districts throughout the country. Services are generally free of charge although fees may be required for confirmatory tests with a positive result.

- STI Treatment - Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections is widely available but quality services are generally provided in large government hospitals

- HIV Treatment and Care ¨C The Chinese government has launched a national AIDS treatment program for rural residents and poor segments of the urban population. Treatment services cover medication but do not always cover costs for doctor's fees, hospital stays, lab work and treatment of opportunistic infections . In addition the national medical insurance for workers includes coverage of medication for AIDS treatment.
